New GB features

Hey all. Here at GB central we’re trying hard to build a product that makes you happy. Here are a few new features in our latest release

  • GB needs some loving from your friends. Why not share some love and invite them to the site. For every 10 friends that activate their account we’ll give you a $10 gift certificate to backcountry.com (terms apply)
  • Love the GB service but want don’t want to clog up your inbox while you’re on vacation? Then you should check out the “Take a Breather” functionality.
  • Feel like the “Gear Gods” release their best gear on Wednesdays? If so, then perhaps you should select to receive our emails only on those days.

Thanks for using GB! We’ll keep working hard. Let us know if there is anything you’d like to see.

Gear Burger: Turbocharged

Hola Gear Burger’ers,

Big changes underfoot here at Gear Burger HQ.  We have drastically changed the Gear Burger service, so please read on so you know what to expect going forward.

GB no longer monitors the 6 one-deal-at-a-time gear sites.
That’s right, we no longer monitor SteepandCheap.com, BonkTown.com, ChainLove.com, Tramdock.com, Brociety.com or WhiskeyMilitia.com.

Why? These sites don’t have very many interesting deals.
These sites are really fun but they each have less than 100 deals per day and they all come from BackCountry.com warehouse.  Additionally, we saw that many of the same products are frequently put on sale over and over.  These factors combine to critically restrict the number of interesting deals we can find for our users.

GB now monitors the full inventory of +20 outdoor retailers.
Instead of monitoring 6 one-deal-at-a-time sites, we now monitor the complete inventory sets of over 20 outdoor retailers.  We’ll use your same user preferences (department, category and brand) but match them to a massively bigger product set and send you one daily email, showcasing the products that have gone on sale in the last 24 hours that match your preferences. So we have gone from seeing ~700 deals per day to monitoring over 2,000 brands and 20,000 products across more than 20 outdoor retailer sites and we’re adding more retailers every day.  The current list of retailers we are monitoring is included below.

To summarize:  No more SteepandCheap.com or others!  Going forward: 1 email per day matching your preferences to tens of thousands of products across +20 outdoor retailers.

We always welcome your feedback on our forums and look forward to providing you the best possible service!

Regards,
Team Gear Burger

Gear Burger Android App

Chad got an Android phone a while back and launched this sweet Gear Burger Android app the other day.  It gives you all the live deals straight to your ‘Droid phone. Check it!

Gear Burger 4.0: Product Following and Live Deals

Version 4.0 is up with the ability to follow specific products and a Live Deals page showing all live deals we’re seeing.  The product pages should be very interesting data sources for folks looking for specific products.  We list all pricing history for products that we have history for – if there is no pricing history none will be shown.  All ~25k products can be found through the catalog link in the header navigation.  The live deals page is also in the header nav and has an RSS feed.  We are super psyched with these features and hope you will be too.  The first thing I did after we launched this feature was to follow the Pontoons.  Deal counter at 17,000 as I type this…huzzah!

Launched.

After a several months of beta testing, Gear Burger launched to the public today without a hitch.  We”re psyched with where the product is today and have some cool ideas in the pipeline that will be launching soon.  As always, let us know how we can improve!

New design! New mascot!

We’re psyched to have launched our new site design and mascot.  We have no idea what it is but we love it just the same.  We also added a nifty feedback tab so we can fit in with in Web 3.0 crew.  Let us know what you think!

Gear Burger 2.0 = Live

After lots of hard work and some serious re-tooling based on our first batch of users” feedback, Gear Burger 2.0 is live and ready for testing.  The site will be getting an extreme makeover and new mascot shortly as well.

New in 2.0:

  1. New signup process which collects brand and product type preferences will improve our match quality;
  2. A “block product” feature will be very useful for blocking repeat items that you aren”t interested in seeing again;
  3. Alert scheduling allows for scheduling alert delivery only within optimal times and prevent overnight inbox assaults; and
  4. A missed deal page which becomes the landing page for an alert click when a deal  has been missed and displays similar deals on the web.

We hope these features will improve the quality of the service and make it more useful generally.  Let us know what you think!

Baby steps…

The Gear Burger has been live for approximately 9 days and we’ve been pumping out tweaks and improvements daily.  We’ve only let in a very small number of users and have already been able to massively improve our processes based on just a little bit of user data.  Apologies to those of you who may have gotten a few extra emails along the way…you can be sure that you have gained Burger Karma by helping us!  We”re getting ready to add a few more users into the system.  Please keep your access credentials private as we”re trying to keep things under control.  As always, send any and all feedback our way and let us know what we can do to make the service more useful for you.
